The United Nations University Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland

The UNU Fisheries Training Prgramme is a postgraduate training programme that offers training in various areas of the fisheries sector for practicing professionals in the less developed countries.

The UNU Fisheries Training Programme is a postgraduate training programme that offers applied training in various areas of the fisheries sector for practicing professionals in the less developed countries. It was established in 1998 after a feasibility study conducted by the UNU and has since then offered over 220 fellowships  to qualified fisheries expertsfrom over 40 countries, and developed short courses on important topics in fisheries in partner countries. The programme is led by the Marine Research Institute in a formal cooperation with the Matis ltd - Food and Biotech R&D, University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri. UNU-FTP draws expertise from both the academia and also from the fishing industry to assist fellows to study issues of great importance to their home countries.

Strategic direction

Location: Iceland (Reykjavik, Akureyri, Holar, and Isafjordur)
Length: 6 months - from September to February/March
Number of fellows: 18-22

Admission's requirements:
  • At least one university degree
  • 1-2 years of experience in the area of interest
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English

UNU-FTP to hold course in the Caribbean on Project Cycle Management

Collaborators from UNU-FTP, CRFM, Univeristy of Belize, and the University of Akureyri
This week, collaborators from the UNU-FTP, The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, and the University of Belize, and the University of Akureyri met in Iceland to plan a short course on Project Cycle Management to be held in the Caribbean. This is one of four short courses the UNU-FTP plans to hold in our partner countries in 2012.
