This module is offered in conjunction with the Stock Assessment module

The aim of the Fishing Technology course is to provide fellows with theoretical knowledge and practical training in fishing technology through a holistic approach.

At the end of this part of the 6-month training course, fellows will have a comprehensive understanding of fishing technology. This will incorporate aspects of the design and production of  fishing gear, the biology and behavior of the fish, the environmental conditions of fishing grounds, and the design and operation of the vessel used to deploy the gear monitor the environment.

The main topics covered in the Fishing Technology course are:

  • Fishing gear and design
  • Existing commercial fishing gear and fishing methods
  • Naval architecture
  • Fish finding and monitoring devices
  • Fish behavior and relationship to fishing gear
  • Gear selectivity and research
